Jim is a third-generation Austinite. Following high school he enrolled at UT and in 1968 received his B.S. in Aerospace Engineering. He then entered the United States Air Force as an Astronautical Engineer. After seven years he was honorably discharged at the rank of Captain. Returning to Austin, he joined the UT NMR Lab in 1978.
Jim handles lab administration and provides operational training of NMR instruments to new users. He also performs experiments for lab users using the AMX-500 and the CMX-300 (for solid-state samples ).
Jim is a "helper" kind of guy, so if you want to get his attention just say you want some help and he will quickly give a you a high priority on his agenda. He and Carol (his bride of 21 years) sing in the choir and are active in other ways at church. He jogs , enjoys yard work, and tries to plan a "bigger than usual" vacation every few years.
